A Rare and Exceptional Regency Treasure
This "Object of Vertu" was made by the celebrated gold-worker Giles Loyer, a master known for his precision and artistry in precious metals.
Design & Craftsmanship
The circular case is a master class in early 19th-century goldsmithing:
The Lid: Features a stunning, crisp engine-turned (guilloché) canter, framed by an exquisite, hand-chased wreath of leaves and berries in contrasting two-colour gold.
The Body: The sides are decorated with deep, crisp floral chasing, maintaining a remarkable tactile quality.
The Interior: Opens to reveal a flawlessly preserved, hand-pierced gold grille featuring a delicate floral/snowflake motif.
Hallmarks & Provenance
The piece is fully and clearly hallmarked on both the interior base and the lid. The marks include the 'GL' for Giles Loyer, the Crown and '18' for 18-carat gold, the Leopard’s Head (London), and the date letter 'r' for 1812.
