This large Edwardian decorative sculpture takes the form of a standing Japanese bear carved in dark brown linden wood, following the Black Forest style typical of a highland hunting lodge interior. The animal stands atop a sculpted rock formation, carrying a fish in relief on its back while grasping another carved object in its front paws. The surface displays hand-chiselled fur texture across the body, open roaring jaws with visible teeth, and glass-set eyes, accompanied by a small shrinkage crack on the back. The sculpture measures 48 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. It functions well as a decorative display piece on a mantelpiece within a traditional living room or study.

Wood carvings depicting wild animals, particularly bears, gained widespread popularity in Switzerland and Central Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries, predominantly crafted by woodcarvers in Brienz using native linden wood.

These sculptures were hand-carved from dense, fine-grained timber such as linden wood or lime wood, which allowed artisans to execute precise textural detailing for animal fur and facial features.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-tool gouge marks, natural wood grain variation, deeply chiselled surface textures, and signs of age such as surface wax buildup and patination.

Place the sculpture on a dark timber mantelpiece, inside a glass display cabinet, or on a bookshelf beside leather-bound volumes to add organic texture and historical craft to a room scheme.

Dust the detailed carved surfaces regularly using a soft-bristled brush, apply a small amount of natural beeswax polish annually, and position the object away from central heating radiators or direct sunlight.
