Originating in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cold-painted bronzes were produced by foundry craftsmen who cast figures in bronze and decorated them with unfired oil paint layers, resulting in expressive, colourful animalier and genre studies.

These sculptures were cast using solid bronze via the lost-wax process and subsequently painted with multiple layers of oil-based enamel pigments that dried naturally without furnace firing.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast weight, crisp metal moulding, natural paint wear where the underlying patinated bronze shows through, and occasionally foundry marks or stamps such as Geschutzt.
