Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt pocket watches from the 18th century typically feature key-wind mechanical movements, porcelain enamel dials with Roman numerals, and decorative gilt-metal cases often decorated with paste gemstones or enamel backs.

These timepieces were constructed using gilded brass or copper, hand-fired enamel dials, glass crystals, and occasionally paste stones or foil-backed crystals surrounding the bezel.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved decorative hands, key-wind arbors accessible on the dial or movement face, hand-painted numeral details, and historical horologist signatures on the internal mechanism.

An antique pocket watch can be presented on a dedicated brass display stand, placed inside a glass cloche, or positioned flat on a desk alongside other historical collectibles.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment away from moisture, dust the exterior gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid applying liquid polishes directly to the gilded surfaces or delicate enamel dial.
