Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Provincial armoires originated in the 18th century as country interpretations of Parisian court styles. They are characterised by regional hardwood construction, notably oak and fruitwood, along with ornate rocaille carvings, curved aprons, and prominent cresting.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or cherry. Construction techniques included hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, raised field panels, and decorative brass or iron escutcheon hardware.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs with slight irregularities, hand-planed backboards, and traditional pegged construction. Look for natural oxidation in the timber joints and original keyplates or hinges showing age-appropriate wear.

A substantial oak armoire serves as a focal point when placed against a neutral backdrop in a bedroom, dressing room, or grand hallway. Balancing its visual weight with contemporary minimalist lighting or streamlined soft furnishings creates a compelling architectural contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber warping or splitting.
