Antique Georgian Period Mahogany Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A wonderful antique Georgian period mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

It is of outstanding quality, it is very well built and it is a useful size, with lots of storage space inside the four drawers. There are lovely brass handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints, this sits on beautifully shaped bracket feet.

The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, we have just had this re-polished, the condition is great for its age. There are various small marks and indentations beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian furniture, produced between 1714 and 1830, is recognised for its classical proportions, elegant symmetry, and the extensive use of high-quality imported mahogany.

Solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers were predominantly favoured, often paired with oak or pine secondary timbers for drawer linings, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-sawn drawer bottoms with grain running front-to-back, hand-cut dovetails, period-appropriate drawer pulls, and natural age-related oxidisation inside the carcass.

Position the chest as a focal storage piece in a hallway or bedroom, pairing the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, minimalist lamps, or modern ceramics for contrast.

Maintain a stable indoor climate away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to protect the timber.
