Black Forest Carved Wood Bear

A fine example of a Black Forest bear carving. The piece is carved in Linden wood to a really high standard and depicts the bear rising on its back legs and carrying an upturned tree stump. The roots of the stump would have been a receptacle for something, perhaps a decanted or comport etc. The piece is in good condition; there has been an old repair around one eye and minor pieces to the tree stump. The whole has a great colour and is a nice early example of these bear carvings with glass eyes. C.1880.
