London from Greenwich Park by T.a Prior - 19th Century Hand Coloured Etching

19th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A nice quality 19th-century hand-coloured print taken from the etching by T.A Prior depicting one of the most famous views of London, the view from the hill in Greenwich Park with a late 20th-century frame. Previously in the collection of Paul Bentley, London book dealer (1931-2022).

Figures in the foreground, including a man selling food and drink from a rug in the left foreground, another man with a wooden leg holding a telescope, and others sitting or strolling through the park; the Old Royal Naval College below next to the Thames, which curves away towards the City of London in the distance; and the Greenwich Observatory slightly further uphill to the left.

The overall condition is very good. We have noted that the frame has a small piece of gold detailing missing from the top left and has come apart slightly on this corner.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century hand-coloured etching is a print created by incising a design into a metal plate with acid, printing the monochrome image onto paper, and subsequently applying watercolours by hand to add detail and tone.

Topographical prints of this era were typically executed on heavy cotton rag paper using oil-based printing inks from etched copper or steel plates, with watercolour washes applied using fine animal hair brushes.

Authentic pieces display a physical plate mark impression around the border, subtle variations in hand-painted watercolour application visible under magnification, and characteristic paper aging such as light foxing or toning.

Framed architectural and landscape prints can be mounted above sideboards, positioned within gallery wall arrangements, or displayed in traditional studies to bring historical depth and structured narrative to modern spaces.

To preserve prints, mount them using acid-free materials behind UV-filtering glass, keep them clear of direct sunlight, and display them in climate-controlled environments to prevent humidity damage.
