Oil On Canvas Depicting Our Lady Of Sorrow By Costantino Frixione 1861
£1,600 $2,168 €1,885
This work presents an exceptional depiction of the Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa (Our Lady of Sorrow), emphasising her profound suffering during the Passion of Christ and typically portrayed with an anguished expression. The detail of her hand holding her cape demonstrates the artist’s refined technique, elegantly situating the Virgin’s portrait within a carefully painted moulded oval frame. The painting''s subtle tonalities are enhanced by deliberate chromatic harmonies and the skilful blending of colours evident in the rendering of her face.
Signed at the back “COSTno FRIXIONE PIN.1861”, meaning Costantino Frixione pinxit, latin for ''he painted it''.
The year 1861 denotes the year of completion. Interestingly, 1861 is the year of the Proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, which may place the work within the context of the Italian Unification (Risorgimento).
The artwork comes in an attractive antique green-painted frame, which is not original to the painting and possibly sli...ghtly older. While the canvas does not perfectly fit within the frame, the beautiful original green paint colour of the frame lends an extra touch of charm to this dramatic as well as decorative portrait. Buyers may purchase the painting without the frame for £200 less than the listed price. (The frame cannot be sold separately.)
Costantino Frixione (Ovada, Italia 1828 – 1902) was part of the 19th-century Italian school and was recognized for his originality, sensitivity, and notable artistic talent. As a student of Tommaso Cereseto, he worked in oils on canvas and frescos, producing paintings depicting saints as well as numerous portraits. Additionally, Frixione demonstrated proficiency in sculpture, and was encouraged by the esteemed master Santo Varni to pursue brief periods of study in Rome, Florence, and Genoa. Nonetheless, Frixione chose not to leave his hometown, believing it shielded him from greed and ambition.
Dimensions: 61cm x 76cm x 4.5cm
