Fine Small Oil Painting of Sheep by Follower of Eugene Verboeckhoven

19th century
Description

A wonderful oil on mahogany panel depicting sheep. The work is very much in the manner of the famous Belgian animal painter Eugene Verboeckhoven (1708-1881) with the sheep superbly observed in great detail and set in a similarly detailed landscape. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and does have an unidentified monogram signature to the lower right. The painting retains the original gilt frame and the whole is in excellent condition. This is a fine example of animal painting of the nineteenth century in the realist tradition. C.1860.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century pastoral painting focuses on realistic depictions of domestic animals and rural countryside scenes, reflecting a Romantic interest in nature and agriculture. Artists of this genre emphasized careful observation of coat textures, natural lighting, and atmospheric sky backgrounds.

Paintings from this era were typically executed in oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or solid timber panels. Frames were constructed from timber coated with gesso moulding, finished with real gold leaf application.

Authentic period works display natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, stable oxidisation of varnish, and historic timber construction on the reverse. Frames should show hand-carved details or early composition ornament with genuine gilded wear.

Small antique paintings can be layered on mantelpieces, styled inside bookshelves, or grouped together on a gallery wall. Pairing traditional gilded frames against dark or muted wall colours creates visual contrast and depth in both contemporary and period homes.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and consult a professional art conservator for surface cleaning.
