Neoclassical Satinwood Marquetry Demi-lune Side Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely executed demi-lune side cabinet conceived in the neoclassical taste, displaying an accomplished command of marquetry, parquetry and richly figured veneers. The serpentine front and bowed ends are raised on tapering square legs terminating in block feet, giving the piece a light architectural presence while maintaining formal classical symmetry.

The cabinet is veneered predominantly in vibrant, flame-figured satinwood, carefully bookmatched across the doors and top to create a luminous and visually dynamic surface. The central pair of cupboard doors are each inlaid with an oval reserve depicting a classical urn draped with festoons, executed in contrasting timbers against a warm ground. These urn panels are framed by delicate stringing and crossbanding, with radiating fan motifs to the corners, demonstrating precise and confident marquetry workmanship. Above, the frieze is decorated with inlaid swags suspended between stylized foliate devices, rendered in subtly stained veneers that provide refined tonal contrast while preserving the overall harmony of the design.

Both bowed sides mirror one another and are centered with striking parquetry panels composed of alternating diamond-shaped veneers in varying tones, creating a bold harlequin effect. The corner stiles are enriched with vertical inlaid foliate motifs and punctuated by applied paterae roundels, introducing subtle relief detail that complements the planar marquetry surfaces. The repetition of the parquetry panels on each side reinforces the cabinet’s balanced and cohesive decorative scheme.

The serpentine top is crossbanded and centered with an oval medallion inlaid with scrolling foliage and anthemion ornament, enclosed within fine stringing that follows the curvature of the outline. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with a fixed shelf, offering practical storage within its highly decorative exterior. The cabinet retains its key and functional lock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical satinwood furniture emerged in the late 18th century, influenced by designers such as Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. It is defined by classical architectural symmetry, lighter timber tones, and refined decorative motifs including urns, festoons, and swags.

Marquetry side cabinets typically feature a core structure of oak or pine veneered with exotic woods such as West Indian satinwood. Artisans construct intricate decorative panels using contrasting wood veneers, such as rosewood, boxwood, and tulipwood, applied using animal protein glues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, irregular hand-sawn veneer thickness, and natural patination on the timber. Inspecting the undersides and backs often reveals hand-planed secondary woods and period brass hardware.

A demi-lune cabinet functions effectively in entryways or dining areas to maximise floor space due to its curved, flush-backed profile. Pairing the golden timber tones with neutral walls or contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain satinwood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting and bleaching. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the timber lustre.
