Mahogany Campaign Naval Pedestal Desk

This is a rare and fascinating 19th-century mahogany campaign/naval twin pedestal desk, presenting an elegant design and functional features.

The hinged, two-part top opens to a plain interior, incorporating a central green baize-lined writing surface and a hinged fall-front section. Beneath this section are two short drawers and six graduated drawers within the pedestal, each fitted with military-style inset brass handles. The desk is supported by plinth bases above bun feet which are later replacements.

The refined craftsmanship is evident in the precise alignment of the top’s two sections, which open smoothly and remain suspended just millimetres above the floor without making contact.

The innovative mechanism transforms the desk’s surface from an elevated platform—ideal for officers to stand and review maps or drawings—to a slightly lower area surrounded by a protective edge, preventing items from falling, and finally into a traditional desk configuration by lowering the three front panels that are hinged at the front.

No keys for the front and rear locks.

This desk has been consistently used and its signs of age and use, which are well distributed to add genuineness to the piece, have to be accepted from any prospective buyer as further evidence of its authenticity.
