FAQs

Latten is a traditional copper alloy resembling brass, widely used in Europe from the Middle Ages through the 17th century for manufacturing domestic utensils, candlesticks, and ecclesiastical fittings.

These pieces were typically cast in moulds using a copper and zinc alloy, then hand-finished, hammered, and polished by metalworkers before receiving maker marks.

Authenticity is determined by examining surface patination, casting seams, wear patterns, alloy composition, and the presence of period-accurate maker marks or touchmarks stamped into the metal.

Such historic items can be displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, mounted on specialized wall brackets, or arranged within shadow boxes to highlight their historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires avoiding harsh chemical polishes and abrasive cleaners to protect the natural historic patina; dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient.
