Antique William IV Period Compactum Wardrobe

19th century
Description

A superb antique William IV period compactum wardrobe in mahogany. This was made in England & dates from around the 1830-1840’s period.

This is of amazing quality and is a most impressive piece. There are two tall sentry box style hanging compartments on either side of a large bank of generous drawers. The flame mahogany panelled doors have beautifully carved baluster rails going down the sides, with incredibly fine details. This sits on an inverted breakfront plinth base and the top has a beautifully moulded cornice. The central bank of drawers are adorned with a stunning shell carved pediment.

The mahogany has a gorgeous rich colour tone and wonderful grain patterns. We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are various small marks and indentations here and there under the polish, commensurate for age.

This breaks down into six smaller sections for ease of transport, when assembled this is a very large item with lots of storage space for clothes.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV period furniture, produced between 1830 and 1837, bridges the refinement of the Regency era and the substantial proportions of early Victorian style. Characteristics include bold architectural silhouettes, extensive use of flame mahogany veneers, turned or spiral columns, and carved motifs such as acanthus leaves and cresting shells.

Nineteenth-century compactums were predominantly constructed using solid pine or oak carcase frames faced with high-grade Cuban or West Indian flame mahogany veneers. Drawer units feature hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber linings, and brass lever locks.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved decorative elements, original brass locks, hand-sawn timber drawer backs, and natural age-related patination on unexposed surfaces. The presence of breakfront proportions alongside bold turned columns is a key stylistic indicator of the 1830s.

A large compactum serves as a primary functional focal point along a main bedroom wall. Balancing its visual mass with neutral wall paint and minimalist contemporary textiles creates a grounded contrast between historic timber work and modern living spaces.

Mahogany surfaces require periodic applications of high-grade beeswax polish rubbed along the grain to preserve moisture and lustre. Protect the timber from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden changes in humidity to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement.
