Rare A. Golay-leresche Geneve 18k Gold Victorian Half Hunter Watch 1870/80s

19th century
Description

This is an antique 18-carat gold half-hunter pocket watch by the esteemed Swiss watchmakers A. Golay-Leresche & Fils, Geneva.

The case is a plain, highly polished gold half-hunter configuration, allowing partial viewing of the dial when closed. The hinged case back features an intricate, hand-engraved monogram with the dominant initial 'CB'. Inside the back cover, official Swiss hallmarks are visible, including the Helvetia head stamp, certifying the 18ct (750 standard) gold purity.

The case serial number, 16732, is engraved both on the inner cover and the movement plate. The white enamel dial features a crisp black outer minute track, blue Roman numerals for the hours, and elegant blued-steel Breguet-style hands.

A functional subsidiary seconds dial is located at the 6 o'clock position. The watch operates via a jeweled mechanical, keyless lever movement wound by the crown at the 3 o'clock position.

The gilded movement plate shows the 'A. Golay-Leresche & Fils, Geneve' inscription. The watch dates to the late 19th century, circa the 1870s to 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half hunter pocket watch, also known as a demi-hunter, is a protective watch case design featuring a central glass window on the front cover. This aperture allows the wearer to read the time via exterior enamelled hour markings without needing to open the case.

Victorian pocket watches were frequently constructed with cases made from solid gold, silver, or rolled gold plate. The dials were typically executed in kiln-fired enamel with hand-painted numerals, paired with blue steel hands and mechanical lever movements.

Authenticity can be verified by examining makers stamps, serial numbers, and gold purity hallmarks inside the case backs. Authentic Swiss timepieces from reputable makers feature precise movement finishing, crisp enamel work, and correct period hallmarks.

Antique pocket watches can be worn traditionally attached to an Albert chain in a waistcoat pocket or jacket lapel. For interior display, horology collectors often present them under glass cloches or mounted on specialised pocket watch stands.

A mechanical pocket watch should be wound gently once daily without forcing the crown. The internal movement requires professional cleaning and re-oiling every three to five years, while the gold case should only be wiped with a clean microfiber cloth.
