This Victorian chest of drawers from the 19th century comes from makers Mawer & Stephenson. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with boxwood string inlay and oak linings, the piece has a rectangular top over two short drawers above two long drawers, finished with brass ring handles and a solid plinth base. Historic knocks, marks, cracks, scratches, wear, imperfections, repairs, and alterations appear across the surfaces. Measuring 98 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, the shallow depth allows placement in a hallway or rooms where traditional cabinet depth is unsuitable. The two-part construction splits for transport, and the drawers slide freely.

A 19th-century mahogany chest of drawers is a solid timber storage unit featuring multiple stacked drawers, constructed using solid mahogany or rich veneers, often accented with boxwood inlay, escutcheon keyholes, and brass hardware.

These pieces typically combine mahogany primary surfaces with oak or pine secondary drawer linings, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, boxwood stringing, and solid cast brass pull handles.

Authentic items display characteristic period joinery including irregular hand-sawn dovetails, period locks, natural timber shrinkage on drawer bottoms, and makers stamps or paper labels from historic cabinetmakers.

Position the chest as a focal storage element in a bedroom, hallway, or living space, pairing dark polished wood with contemporary modern art or neutral wall colours to create visual depth.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain, and position away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement.
