An utterly fresh Luminist and Post-Impressionist floral study by the renowned Belgian artist Armand Apol (1879-1950). Known primarily for his atmospheric landscapes, this rare still life demonstrates Apol’s exceptional command of colour and light during the interwar period.
The work captures a bouquet of anemones in a rounded ceramic vase, set against an interior. Apol utilizes a bold, Fauvist palette—rich indigos, vibrant magentas, and deep violets—to give the flowers a sense of living energy.
Of particular note is the background''s execution. Apol employs elements of Pointillism and ''divisionist'' brushwork in the upper register, creating a shimmering, fractured light that allows the domestic setting—a mantelpiece with a clock and framed art—to feel both tangible and dreamlike.
As a leading figure in the Belgian Luminist movement, Apol exhibited at the 16th, 17th and 18th annual exhibition at the Carnegie Centre in Pittsburgh.
Apol was obsessed with the ''vibration'' of
...light. In this piece, the light doesn''t just hit the objects; it seems to emanate from the canvas itself. The transition from the structured, impasto strokes of the petals to the ethereal, sketchy background is a hallmark of his late 1920s and early 30s style.
