Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Spelter, known in French as regule, became popular during the mid-to-late 19th century as a lighter and more economical alternative to bronze. French foundries cast these zinc-alloy figures in large quantities, often featuring classical, allegorical, or industrial themes to decorate domestic interiors.

Spelter is primarily an alloy of zinc, often combined with lead or copper, which melts at lower temperatures than bronze. Once cast, the figures were typically coated with a dark chemical patina or bronzed finish and mounted on wooden, marble, or slate bases.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a softer, lighter metal underneath the outer coating, which can be seen if the patina wears away. They often feature crisp detail from initial castings, seam lines from two-part moulds, and bases made of turned timber or carved stone.

Pairing classical metal statuettes with modern, neutral backgrounds creates an appealing contrast. Placing them symmetrical on a sideboard, console, or mantelpiece provides structural balance and introduces sculptural texture to a room.

Dust spelter sculptures gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush to clear intricate crevices. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or water, which can strip the delicate surface patina and compromise the underlying zinc alloy.
