Description

An assured Victorian mahogany pedestal desk with a large inset leather writing surface above a long central frieze drawer, flanked by two pedestals of graduated drawers with original brass handles, all raised on plinth bases with castors.

Made for professional office use, combining a generous working space with practical storage, its modest footprint and fully finished back make it suitable for placement either centrally or against a wall within a study or library.

Very good antique condition with some attractive surface wear consistent with age. The leather is a high-quality later replacement, the handles are original. Structurally all sound, clean and ready to place.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian desks, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, typically feature solid proportions, rich dark wood grains, and functional multi-drawer configurations designed for administrative and scholarly work.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct construction markers such as hand-cut dovetailing, solid timber drawer linings, traditional brass drop handles, and natural age-related patina on the wood and leather surfaces.

A traditional wooden desk can serve as a striking focal point in a contemporary home office or study, contrasting effectively against minimalist walls and modern seating while providing practical workspace.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply occasional traditional beeswax polish to nourish the grain without using harsh modern chemical cleaners.
