A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers typically featuring seven graduated drawers, secured by a hinged locking side stile with a single key. Originating in the early 19th century, it is traditionally attributed to the Duke of Wellington.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and flame veneer drawer fronts.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut dovetailing, traditional timber shrinkage, the presence of an operational locking side mechanism with an original lock and key, and period-appropriate hardware and secondary softwoods.

Its vertical proportions make it ideal for rooms with limited floor space, serving as a functional storage piece in a bedroom, study, or hallway while contrasting cleanly against neutral or contemporary backgrounds.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from rapid temperature fluctuations, cleaning only with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the timber.
