Carriage clocks originated in France during the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, officers, and the wealthy to carry during journeys.

These clocks typically feature a heavy brass or gilded bronze case inset with bevelled glass panels, often decorated with champleve or cloisonne enamel work and mechanical lever movements.

Authenticity is identified by examining the quality of the hand-chased brass, the weight of the cast case, the presence of serial numbers on the movement, and traditional platform escapements.

Place the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table to add metallic warmth, historical interest, and architectural detail to contemporary spaces.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, avoid using abrasive chemical cleaners on the brass or enamel, and have the mechanical movement serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
