Victorian furniture, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompasses a variety of revival styles drawing inspiration from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo periods, typically characterised by heavy proportions and dark, rich woods.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood for primary visible surfaces, often supported by secondary structural timbers like pine or oak for drawer linings and carcases.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, timber shrinkage consistent with age, hand-turned wooden knobs or brass hardware, and secondary woods inside the drawers that match period practices.

An antique mahogany chest provides a grounding anchor in a modern room; balance its deep tones and traditional silhouette by pairing it with minimalist lighting, neutral walls, and contemporary abstract art.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth, and periodically applying pure beeswax to nourish the wood grain.
