The original Marley horses are monumental marble sculptures commissioned by King Louis XV in the 18th century from sculptor Guillaume Coustou for the watering place at the Chateau de Marly.

Nineteenth-century sculptures were typically crafted using the lost-wax method or sand-casting techniques, utilizing high-quality copper and tin alloy bronzes often finished with chemical patination.

Authentication involves examining the depth and quality of the patination, checking for foundry marks or artist signatures, and inspecting the casting seams and interior hollows consistent with period manufacturing techniques.

These pieces function effectively as focal points on heavy timber sideboards, marble mantelpieces, or executive desks, contrasting classical movement with clean modern lines.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the patina, avoiding all water and chemical cleaning agents.
