Antique Oak & Leather Malvern College Heraldic Fire Screen C.1920

1900 - 1920
Sold 15 January 2026 · Founders Antiques
This “Antique Oak & Leather Malvern College Heraldic Fire Screen C.1920” found a buyer.

It was listed by Founders Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A commanding heraldic fire screen bearing the arms of Malvern College. The screen is formed with a shaped top and studded leather field, centred by a raised relief heraldic shield and motto “Sapiens qui prospicit” (“Wise is the person who looks ahead”), all supported on a finely shaped solid oak stand. The heraldic decoration is modelled directly into the leather rather than applied, and finished with painted and gilt detail.

A particularly strong freestanding decorative piece with real visual impact, conceived as an upright focal object rather than a purely functional fire guard.

Presented in very good antique condition, with an attractive aged patina to the oak and leather, and minor surface wear consistent with age and use. Structurally sound and stable, with the leatherwork and painted detail well preserved, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1920.

Fire screens were originally utilised in period homes during the cooler months to shield occupants from the intense heat of an open fire when unlit, and later served to block drafts and conceal unappealing hearths during summer.

Traditional fire screens typically feature a solid timber frame, often oak or mahogany, supporting a decorative panel crafted from materials such as tooled leather, needlepoint tapestry, or painted wood, secured with brass upholstery tacks.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the joinery, timber ageing, the natural patina of the leather or fabric, and the manual fastening methods such as hand-hammered brass tacks rather than modern industrial fixings.

An antique fire screen functions as a striking decorative focal point when placed in front of an unused fireplace hearth, adding historical texture, warmth, and character to contemporary living spaces.

Preserve antique leather by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting gently with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying specialist leather wax or conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
