Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century Italian polychrome carving is a wooden sculptural work, often created for religious or architectural contexts, that has been decorated with layers of paint and pigment to create life-like details and skin tones.

Sculptors historically carved these objects from native hardwoods or softwoods such as linden, lime, or pine, applying a ground layer of gesso before painting with mineral-based pigments, egg tempera, or oil finishes.

Authentic period carvings display natural age-related shrinkage cracks along the grain, layered paint loss revealing underlying gesso or bare timber, and hand-carving marks underneath the surface finish.

Interior designers frequently position mounted head carvings on plinths within modern minimalist rooms, placing them on modern consoles, bookshelves, or side tables to create a striking historical focal point.

Keep polychrome carvings in climate-controlled environments away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, dusting only with a soft brush to prevent disturbing fragile or flaking paint layers.
