Alexandre Falguière was one of the most celebrated French sculptors in the second half of the nineteenth century. Born in Toulouse, he learnt drawing in Paris at Carrier-Belleuse and in 1854 entered the school of fine arts in the workshop of François Jouffroy at the Ecole de Beaux Arts. He made his debut at the Salon in 1857 and won the Prix de Rome in 1859 with Mézence blessé. He then spent five years at the French Academy in Rome and sent several of his works to the Salon.
