Fine French Antique (19thc) Bronze Bust, Diana the Huntress, After Alexandre Falguière

19th century
Description

Superb French antique (19thC) bronze bust of Diana the Huntress (Diana of Versailles) after Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900). The crescent adorning the forehead tells us this is Diana, the goddess’s non-idealised facial features, the bust’s defiant poise and striking profile shines through to full effect. On stone base. 45cm high x 30 wide x 18cm deep, weight 7.6kg

Very good condition and patina.

Alexandre Falguière was one of the most celebrated French sculptors in the second half of the nineteenth century. Born in Toulouse, he learnt drawing in Paris at Carrier-Belleuse and in 1854 entered the school of fine arts in the workshop of François Jouffroy at the Ecole de Beaux Arts. He made his debut at the Salon in 1857 and won the Prix de Rome in 1859 with Mézence blessé. He then spent five years at the French Academy in Rome and sent several of his works to the Salon. In 1868 he was awarded the medal of honor with his Tarcicius.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
