Handsome French Art Deco (ca 1930) bronze statue of two panthers by Andre-Vincent Becquerel (1893-1981), one grooming itself while the other rests its head on the former's back. This sculpture is one of Becquerel’s most famous works made during the Art Deco period. Signed ‘BECQUEREL’. Ca 46cm long x 21cm high x 11cm deep, weight 6.75kg.

Excellent condition and patina. A beautiful bronze.

Andre-Vincent Becquerel was born at St. Andre-Farivilliers (Oise, France) and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris with Hector Lemaire and then with the animal sculptor Prosper Lecourtier. He specialised in animal sculpture, with a preference for predators, felines, raptors and ornithological subjects, which he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1914 to 1922 and where he became a lifetime member.
