This nineteenth-century Victorian cast iron paperweight depicts a standing figural sculpture of the Reverend Joshua Brooks, also known as The Manchester Man. Modelled wearing a tricorn hat, period coat and breeches, the dark brown piece rests upon an integrated square plinth base. A heavily textured, patinated metal surface shows visible casting seams and surface wear throughout the figure's garments and hat. The sturdy construction stands at 15 cm high on a rectangular footprint, giving it a solid weight suitable for anchoring loose papers on a traditional desk. Placed upon a gentleman's library study table or an office desk, the figurine functions as a practical stationery accessory while introducing historical character to an interior workspace. The compact proportions allow the sculpture to sit neatly beside blotters, inkwells and pen stands without dominating the surface area. The dark metallic finish integrates smoothly with timber desks, leather desk pads and brass accessories in a traditional or period-inspired study environment.

These functional desk items were produced in metal foundries throughout the nineteenth century, combining utility with decorative figures depicting historical, satirical, or local personalities.

Molten iron was poured into sand moulds crafted from a carved master pattern, leaving a subtle seam line and a distinct textured surface once cooled and finished.

Authentic period items display natural handling wear on raised areas, tight surface grain, crisp casting details, and a dark, naturally oxidised patina rather than fresh paint.

Position the piece on a study desk, atop a stack of leather-bound books, or within a curated shelf arrangement to introduce historical texture.

Dust regularly with a dry soft brush and apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the metal from humidity and surface oxidisation.
