Smith (fl. 1830–1847).

The painting depicts a young girl seated beside her younger sibling in a wooded landscape. The child holds a whip, possibly a toy or hobby horse accessory. The figures are painted with sensitivity and precision, the artist showing notable skill in capturing character and costume detail. The palette is soft and the overall composition engaging.

Signed ‘Bell Smith’ to the lower right—an alternate form used by the artist.
Housed in a richly moulded giltwood and gesso frame, likely original to the painting. The frame has some areas of wear and minor losses as shown, but remains attractive and structurally sound. Canvas in good order.

Provenance: From a country house in Worcestershire. Acquired at auction in the 1990s for £4,500.
