Number 27 in Mene’s catalogue and titled therein Group Chevaux Arabes this bronze group is considered one of Mene’s masterpieces. It was exhibited in wax at the Paris Salon in 1862,in bronze the following year 1853 and at the Exposition Universelle of 1855.
The two horses are Tachiani and Nedjibe, both appearing in separate models. Here, as a group, their individual characteristics are shown superbly. The spirited stallion and the tetchy mare make this composition exceptional.
This original 19th century lifetime casting has a rich dark brown patination with superb chiselling and detail.
Another cast of this model is held in The Louvre Museum, Paris.
One of the finest of all equestrian bronzes.
