Oil On Canvas.

Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven died on 19 January 1881 in Brussels at the age of 83, one of the most well-respected and prolific artists of his day.

He was born in West Flanders, Belgium.

Verboeckhoven was an excellent painter of animals and, appears to have been the last link to a secular tradition with its roots deep in the 17th century, which linked observation of nature, studied composition, and idealized reproduction of reality.

Like the Old Masters, he obtained the colour blue for his skies by grinding down lapis lazuli.

He visited France and Great Britain (1826), Germany (1828) and Italy (1841.

As his reputation grew, Verboeckhoven's clients were increasingly international.

Collectors in the United States, England, Germany and Russia eagerly sought his work, eventually making him one of the most famous and successful artists of his day.

He exhibited in salons throughout Europe and in many private galleries, particularly in London, Paris and St. Petersburg Russia.

He was a Member of The Royal Academy of Belgium, of the Commission of Directors of the Royal Museums of Painting and Sculpture of Belgium; the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp), Ghent and St Petersburg, Commander of the Orders of Leopold, of Franz Joseph of Austria and Chevalier of the Legion of Honour of France, He also possessed the Croix de Guerre, which he received for his patriotic services during the Belgian Revolution of 1830.

He was buried with Military honours.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pastoral landscape oil paintings from the 19th century typically depict peaceful rural vistas featuring domesticated animals, rendered with realistic detail and naturalistic light inspired by earlier Dutch master painters.

Artwork from this era was executed using oil-based pigments on woven flax canvas stretched across wooden stretcher bars, encased in carved timber frames finished with water-gilded or oil-gilded leaf.

Authentic period canvases display age-appropriate craquelure across the painted surface, historic oxidisation on the reverse timber and canvas, original stretcher construction, and period frame attachment hardware.

A ornate gilt-framed oil painting creates a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist contemporary console table or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall with varied frame profiles.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the carved frame gently with a soft dry brush while leaving surface canvas cleaning to a qualified art conservator.
