Plaster Sculpture of a Samurai Warrior

19th century
For Sale by Elmgarden
Description

Plaster Sculpture of a Samurai Warrior

The Samurai were a caste of warrior in Japan for over 7 Centuries, this plaster figure celebrates the Samurai in all his elegant finery

He is bare footed and is carrying a large decorated fan in one hand and making the sign to ward off evil with the other, beneath his coat we can see his sword

It is impossible to emphasise the fineness of the detail in this piece, from the twisted under garments and flaring of the coat to the fine skin tones

The statue been fully restored it is set on a square plinth and there is a signature underneath, I believe that this is a piece of French manufacture

The statue is 40” tall and the base is 10” square

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Plaster sculptures depicting traditional Japanese figures became prominent in European decorative arts during the late nineteenth century as Japonisme gained popularity. European artisans produced cast plaster and chalkware statues painted with polychrome finishes to satisfy demand for East Asian-inspired home decor.

These figures were cast using plaster of Paris or dense chalkware mixes poured into multi-piece moulds. Once cured, the surfaces were decorated using tempera, oil paint, or metallic powders and metal leaf for gilded highlights.

Authentic period pieces feature hollow cores, visible seam lines from original plaster moulds, and natural paint wear showing white plaster beneath. Aged examples display softening of fine details and authentic patination rather than modern brushwork.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a sideboard, within a recessed wall alcove, or alongside dark wood furniture in a study. Combining figural statuary with clean, contemporary lines creates architectural contrast and visual interest.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or compressed air, avoiding liquid cleaners which can soften painted plaster surfaces. Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent cracking or paint flaking.
