Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1880 Danish serpentine front commode belongs to the Scandinavian Country style and is made from painted oak with brass hardware. The piece has a pale grey-green distressed paint finish, four drawers, ornate brass drop handles, central keyhole escutcheons, and short cabriole legs. The exterior shows visible wear and age to the painted surface. Measuring 123 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, this chest of drawers provides ample storage capacity for a bedroom, hallway, or living space. It works well against a wall to hold folded garments, linens, or everyday items while adding a traditional continental aesthetic to the room.

FAQs

A Danish serpentine front commode is an 18th- or 19th-century storage cabinet featuring a gracefully undulating front profile influenced by French Rococo design. Scandinavian makers adapted these forms with native woods, distressed chalky paint finishes, and refined cast brass hardware.

These commodes were typically constructed from softwoods like pine or hardwoods like birch and oak, joined with hand-cut dovetails. The exterior was often painted with mineral-based pigments, finished with cast brass handle plates and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved drawer runners, uneven back boards showing hand-plane marks, and natural wear to the painted surface, particularly around handles and edges. Older paint layers often reveal undercoats or bare timber through gentle distressing.

Place a serpentine commode as a focal point in an entryway, bedroom, or living area to introduce soft curves against linear architecture. Pair it with a modern contemporary mirror or simple table lamp to balance historical patina with clean modern lines.

Maintain historical painted surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or wet wiping, which can strip fragile pigments and historic patination.
