Description

The origin of 19th century Serapi carpets is quite obscure. We know they were woven in Persian Azerbaijan, but it is often difficult to attribute more precisely a town or weaving centre. That is most certainly the case with this beautiful carpet, although the weave and execution of the design suggest that it was woven in a village setting rather than in a workshop. Noteworthy features include a very subtle range of natural colours, including a delightful pale salmon pink, light blues, taupe, and undyed camel's wool which features in the medallion and anchors. Note also, the absence of a dark blue, seen more often than not in Serapi carpets. This gives the impression of a very light and delicate palette. Please look at the archaic drawing of the medallion and ivory spandrels, and the graphic beauty of the earthy grey stylised floral border. Note too the difference between the widths of the long borders and end borders, another clear indication of a village setting as the origin of this piece. Given its age, this carpet is in generally good condition with even pile throughout. There has been some minor restoration, professionally executed in our workshop. Professionally cleaned. This carpet is a great room-size, and would be a wonderful complement to many types of decorative settings.
