Double-ended sofas, often called salon or conversational settees, became popular during the Victorian era. Their symmetrical design allowed two people to sit facing opposite directions or converse comfortably while adhering to strict Victorian social etiquette.

Victorian seating typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood for the structural frames and exposed carvings. Interiors relied on traditional upholstery techniques, including coil springs, animal hair stuffing, and hand-stitched webbing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved wooden details, traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon, and often feature original brass castors on the feet. The wood grain should show natural ageing, and the construction methods should align with 19th-century cabinet-making standards.

Pairing a period settee with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced eclectic aesthetic. Using neutral or textured modern upholstery can ground the ornate wooden frame, allowing the antique silhouette to serve as a focal point.

Protect the wooden frame from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Clean the wood periodically with a soft, dry cloth and beeswax, and consult a professional restorer for antique fabric maintenance.
