The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George, from 1714 to 1830, and is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Cabinet makers of the Georgian era predominantly used solid mahogany or oak for structural framing, often incorporating figural mahogany veneers on drawer fronts and secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings and carcase backs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, hand-forged or cast brass hardware with appropriate patination, and secondary woods consistent with eighteenth-century British cabinet-making practices.

Pairing a dark wood antique chest of drawers with neutral walls and contemporary lighting creates a balanced focal point, allowing the rich grain and traditional craftsmanship to contrast effectively with minimalist decor.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the natural finish.
