Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow cabinet typically fitted with seven drawers, named after the First Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo. Characterised by a hinged vertical flap on one side that locks all drawers simultaneously, it was designed to provide secure, compact storage for travelling officers and private residences.

These chests were predominantly crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber drawer linings, turned wooden knobs or small brass drop handles, and a weighted plinth base.

Authentic Regency pieces usually feature classical proportions, carved corbels or pilasters flanking the drawers, and original locking side flaps. Check for hand-planed drawer bottoms, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and period-appropriate lock mechanisms.

Due to its tall, slim proportions, a Wellington chest fits well into narrow alcoves, hallways, or study corners. It functions effectively as a focal point in contemporary or eclectic spaces, paired with simple modern artwork or framed prints hung above it.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or fading of the natural walnut figure.
