FAQs

The animalier movement, prominent in nineteenth-century France, focused on the realistic and dynamic portrayal of animals, particularly horses, lions, and dogs, by skilled sculptors working in bronze.

These pieces were typically cast using the traditional lost-wax method, known as cire perdue, which allowed for intricate detail in the metalwork, often mounted on a marble or slate plinth.

Authentic period bronzes feature heavy casting, fine chisel work on the surface details, natural patination showing age, and frequently foundry marks or artist signatures inscribed in the base.

This type of sculpture adds a classical focal point when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk, complementing both traditional study spaces and minimalist modern shelving.

Bronze requires minimal maintenance; dusting with a soft, dry cloth is usually sufficient. Chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes must be avoided to protect the original patina.
