FAQs

Early 19th-century British watercolour painting is characterised by topographical accuracy, atmospheric effects, and the use of layered washes combined with gouache highlights to capture light and texture on paper.

These works typically utilise handmade rag paper, natural pigments bound in water-soluble gum Arabic, and occasional applications of bodycolour or gouache for opacity, mounted with traditional framing techniques.

Authentication involves examining paper watermarks, the composition style typical of the period, artist signatures or monograms, and physical evidence of ageing such as foxing and oxidisation of the pigments.

An antique painting adds historical depth and character to a room; it is best displayed using museum-grade UV-protective glazing and neutral framing to allow the historical narrative to complement contemporary spaces.

Conservation requires keeping the artwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable humidity levels to avoid mould or paper degradation, and using acid-free archival mounting materials.
