Small Watercolour of a Georgian Gentleman

19th century
Description

A small half-length watercolour portrait of a Regency gentleman wearing a charcoal grey coat with an M notch in the lapels over a white waistcoat, frilled chemise and stock. Sporting fashionable side-whiskers, his hair is rumpled on top in the a la Titus style. all of which dates the portrait to the period 1800-1810.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian portraiture emphasized realistic yet refined likenesses of individuals, capturing sitters in formal attire such as cravats and tailored coats reflecting early 19th-century British fashion.

Artists frequently rendered small-scale portraits using watercolour paint on paper or card, subsequently mounted behind glass within timber frames.

Authentic pieces feature period-specific costume details, hand-painted brushwork, natural age-related patination on the frame, and period backing methods.

Small framed portraits work effectively when arranged within a gallery wall grouping, placed on a deep window sill, or set upon a bookshelf alongside contemporary decor.

Keep watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity, utilise UV-protective glass, and preserve original timber frames and backings.
