The William and Mary style, spanning the late 17th and early 18th centuries, is characterised by Dutch influences, turned trumpet legs, baroque curves, and sophisticated veneering techniques such as burr elm and walnut.

Pieces from this era typically utilized native timbers like oak, pine, elm, and walnut, often enhanced with highly figured burr veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction markers such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, old secondary woods, hand-wrought iron or brass fixings, and natural oxidisation consistent with age.

Integrating historic furniture into contemporary spaces creates visual contrast; place the piece against a minimalist neutral wall to highlight its intricate wood grain and sculptural silhouette without overwhelming the room.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic applications of traditional beeswax to nourish and protect the antique timber surface.
