Self-portrait Oil Painting by Edwin Marsh

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine oil on canvas self-portrait by the artist Edwin Walter Marsh 1894-1955. The portrait is expertly handled with focus on the face and expression with a much looser brushwork used for the body and background. The whole has a wonderfully intense presence handled with confidence and I particularly like the paintbrush in hand. The painting is in very good condition, it has been professionally cleaned, and is signed and dated to the lower left: Edwin Marsh 1924. Edwin Walter Marsh 1894-1955 was a portrait and landscape painter from Nottingham and exhibited between 1915-1939. Marsh exhibited mainly in Nottingham with exhibitions at the castle and was an associate member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, he also exhibited at The Royal Cambrian Academy and was a teacher. This self-portrait is framed in a simple painted period frame that works well with the artwork. The painting has a wonderful period look and is ready to hang.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century portraiture often features realistic depictions of subjects using oil paints on canvas, combining classical figurative techniques with modern, expressive brushwork.

These artworks generally feature oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, secured within a moulded timber or gilded frame.

Authentication involves examining artist signatures, analyzing natural craquelure in the paint layer, studying brushwork style, and checking frame construction for period-appropriate aging.

A portrait oil painting adds depth to a modern gallery wall, creates a focal point above a mantelpiece, or provides classical contrast when paired with contemporary minimalist furniture.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity, dusting the frame lightly with a soft, dry brush without touching the painted surface.
