Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Masquerade portraiture emerged as a popular genre during the 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the aristocratic fascination with carnival balls, theatrical costume, and anonymity. Artists portrayed subjects holding domino masks or dressed in fancy attire to symbolise playfulness, intrigue, and social status.

Traditional oil paintings on board utilised wooden panels such as mahogany, oak, or pine, which were prepared with layers of gesso to create a smooth surface. Oil-based pigments ground with linseed or walnut oil were then applied, resulting in a durable artwork with crisp brushwork.

Authentic period paintings on board typically exhibit natural craquelure across the paint layer, age-appropriate darkening or yellowing of the varnish, and oxidisation or wear to the wooden reverse. Original period framing often features hand-carved or molded plaster detailing with genuine gold leaf gilding.

An antique portrait can serve as a focal point when hung above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or integrated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary prints. Pairing classical figurative art with minimalist furniture creates a balanced, curated contrast.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators to prevent panel warping or paint flaking. Dust gently with a dry, soft camel-hair brush, and consult a professional art conservator for varnish removal or surface cleaning.
