Description

A 19th Century French Walnut Commode with Faux Wood Top.

This handsome commode has several features that make it particularly interesting. It has a concealed drawer in the frieze above the three drawers below and across all of the drawer fronts the maker has aligned the bookmatched veneers so they create an interesting repeating pattern of circles and crosses. The top of the commode is a piece of timber that has been painted in imitation of figured walnut.

This is a very attractive commode that has a nice colour and surface.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century French commodes are characterised by substantial proportions, classical architectural lines, and a focus on high-quality timber veneers such as burr walnut.

These pieces typically feature solid oak or pine carcases overlaid with book-matched or flame-figured walnut veneers, assembled using traditional hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetail joinery, secondary timbers appropriate to the region, period-correct brass key escutcheons, and natural oxidation within the drawer interiors.

An antique walnut commode can anchor a modern bedroom or living space by contrasting its rich, figured timber grain against neutral walls and minimalist contemporary decor.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax.
