A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers characterised by a hinged locking side stile that secures all the drawers at once. Originating in the early 19th century, the design is traditionally attributed to the Duke of Wellington, though this remains largely anecdotal.

These chests are typically constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring fine veneer work, boxwood stringing, and marquetry inlays. They utilise traditional dovetail joinery for the drawers and brass hardware for the handles and locking mechanism.

Authentication involves examining the secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetails, and the mechanics of the locking stile. Genuine period pieces exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast brass fittings, and construction techniques consistent with 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Due to its vertical proportions and small footprint, a Wellington chest serves well in tighter spaces like hallways or bedrooms. Pair it with minimalist contemporary art or modern lighting to create a balanced contrast between antique warmth and clean modern lines.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly to nourish the wood finish.
