FAQs

Florentine furniture decoration stems from traditional Tuscan craftsmanship, heavily influenced by Renaissance and Baroque design periods, where wood carvers and gilders utilised intricate metal leaf techniques to create opulent furnishings for palazzos.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as basswood, pine, or walnut, featuring hand-carved details, gesso preparation layers, and applied gold or silver leaf finished with protective varnishes or antiquing glazes.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails, the natural ageing and micro-cracking of the gesso and gilt layers, hand-forged or cast metal hardware, and construction timbers appropriate to the stated period.

Pair the ornate metallic piece with minimalist, neutral surroundings to allow the craftsmanship to stand out, balancing the historical weight with clean-lined contemporary lighting and simple decorative accessories.

Preserve gilded surfaces by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity swings, and avoiding all chemical cleaners, waxes, or moisture.
