This nineteenth-century Swedish Biedermeier chest of drawers exemplifies a grand Regency aesthetic. Constructed from a pine carcase with flame mahogany veneers in a warm brown colourway, the piece exhibits book-matched figuring across its five graduated drawers. Each drawer is fitted with a central brass keyhole escutcheon. The exterior incorporates a stepped top with a moulded edge, hand-carved scrolling front feet, and block feet to the reverse. Surface marks are present across the woodwork in line with age and use, following a recent workshop repolishing. The chest measures 117 cm high, 88.2 cm wide, and 50.1 cm deep. Position this chest of drawers in a bedroom, hallway, or living space to provide substantial storage for clothing, linens, or household items. The warm timber tones and balanced proportions integrate easily into both traditional and contemporary interiors. Everyday placement requires adequate floor space to accommodate the 88.2 cm width and 50.1 cm depth while allowing full access to the five stacked drawers.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century Swedish furniture often reflects Biedermeier and Neoclassical influences, characterised by clean architectural silhouettes, functional proportions, and highly figure-grained timber veneers such as flame mahogany or birch.

Cabinetmakers typically constructed the core frame from softwoods like pine, applying rich decorative veneers such as flame mahogany, walnut, or birch onto the primary exterior surfaces, often finished with brass or bone escutcheons.

Authentic pieces from this period demonstrate traditional joinery including hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, natural uneven wear across timber drawer runners, and historical keyhole hardware.

A tall chest of drawers functions well as a focal piece in a bedroom, hallway, or living area, pairing warm timber tones against contemporary neutral walls and modern artwork to create visual contrast.

To preserve flame mahogany veneer, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying and lifting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually.
