Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Totai Shippo is a specialised Japanese craft developed during the Meiji period in the late 19th century. Unlike standard cloisonne which uses a metal substrate, Totai Shippo applies metal wire cloisons and vitreous enamels directly onto a ceramic or earthenware body, frequently incorporating a distinctive textured tree-bark background.

The base object is moulded from ceramic or earthenware, onto which delicate brass or silver wires are applied to form design outlines. Colored enamels fill the wired cells, and the piece undergoes firing before the exposed ceramic background is textured and finished to resemble natural tree bark or wood grain.

Authentic pieces feature delicate metal wiring attached to a ceramic core rather than solid metal, visible under close inspection at exposed rims or bases. Look for characteristic bark-like surfaces, complex enamel decoration, and occasional impressed or painted maker marks on the underside.

Place Totai Shippo items on a sideboard, display shelf, or mantelpiece where light highlights the contrast between the matte textured bark and glossy enamels. Grouping with dark hardwood furniture, minimalist modern ceramics, or brass objects creates a balanced display.

Keep ceramic cloisonne dry and clean using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or soft brush to clear dust from textured areas. Avoid immersion in water, chemical cleaners, or rapid temperature changes, as moisture can compromise the bond between the ceramic base and enamel layers.
