A beautifully painted landscape on the River Bure at Stokesby near Acle.

Houses line the river bank into the distance, with wherry boats and a man fishing from a small row boat lower left.

Signed lower left with title label verso. Presented within a glazed giltwood frame with cream mount.

Condition: Light fading as evident from the images and video provided. Good strong colours, fine attention to detail.

Charles Harmony Harrison was born in Great Yarmouth in 1842. He was the apprentice to sign writer Mr Platt. Whilst apprentice to Mr Platt, Charles gained knowledge on how to mix and apply paints, developing his knowledge on colour.

In his spare time, Charles studied art, gaining a deeper understanding through reading, visiting exhibitions and studying the Norwich School of Artists, notably works by Crome and Cotman.

In 1869 he joined the Yarmouth Artillery Volunteers and later the Rifle Volunteers. In 1870 he was gifted a box of watercolour paints and this was when he discovered he had an artistic talent.

His Norfolk landscapes and seascapes became increasing popular with locals and Charles when on to become a professional artist.

In 1877 Charles moved to London in the hope that in doing so, he would be able to gain valuable advice on selling his works. He moved back to Great Yarmouth within a year of leaving.

He concentrated on capturing Norfolk landscapes and in 1880 he met fellow artist Stephen John Batchelder. The pair often travelled and painted together, often conducting works on Batchelder’s small boat which allowed Charles to capture peaceful scenes showing the tree lined backwaters.
