FAQs

Traditional Chinese painting, known as guohua, has a history spanning over two millennia. It traditionally involves brushwork with ink and water-soluble colours on paper or silk, often focusing on nature subjects such as birds, flowers, and landscapes.

Authentic historical pieces were typically created using animal-hair brushes, mineral and vegetable watercolours, and specialised Xuan paper or treated silk fabrics, often mounted on silk brocade borders.

Authentication involves examining the quality of brushstrokes for natural fluidity, assessing the ageing of the paper or silk substrate, inspecting mounting techniques, and identifying period-correct pigments and ink absorption.

Such pieces serve as sophisticated focal points when paired with neutral walls, minimalist wooden frames, or traditional East Asian furniture, allowing the subtle colours and delicate brushwork to stand out.

To prevent fading and degradation, frame the artwork with UV-filtering conservation glass, keep it away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and maintain stable indoor temperatures.
